The film starts with the seemingly normal day of Aishwarya Rai, as she gets ready for work. However, just when she is about to get dressed, a policewoman stops her, takes her away to a locked room and tells her that she is to be present at the marriage of her friend, a boy called Maqbool Fida Husain. As the girl tries to convince the policewoman of her innocence, she gets herself into a lot of trouble. But in the end she does manage to get herself out of the marriage.

The girl soon gets aware of what is going on in her friend’s marriage and decides to help him get out of it. She does this by convincing her friend’s husband to let go of him and remarry her daughter. This pleases her friend, Afsha (Sagar Kohli), who in the meantime finds herself drawn into the marriage. However, the marriage turns sour when Afsha’s husband discovers that she is dating another man. He beats her and throws her out of the house. She then finds help from a boy called Maqbool, who wants to help her.

The movie is based on true events and has many twists and turns. There are so many scenes which are unbelievable that one begins to wonder if they are true or just made up. For instance, the girl’s family is rich and she does not own a single diamond. They arrange for her to be married off to an old man, Rizwan (Hamid Bakhtan), who owns a car dealership. This is obviously impossible as Rizwan is dead.

In the next few days, the girl meets with three men who want her to work as a live-in assistant in their store. The men force her to work and she hates it. She refuses to work any longer and tells them that she will leave only if they allow her to visit her family. Her relatives and friends try to stop her but she just leaves them and goes to her new home.

A month later, the girl’s best friend Naim lives with her in their house. Naim’s younger brother Mualim (Koena Sheikh) comes to stay with her. Naim’s brother is an only child but has inherited the family business. Just as the girl gets bored of her job, she gets a call from her sister Saleh (Sandra Oh), who tells her that Naim is in trouble in the United States. The two sisters immediately go to Saleh’s house where Naim is being held against his will. Just as she is about to leave, Saleh runs out to meet her.

Naim tries to reason with the girl but she ignores him. Later that night, Saleh finds Naim alone in the house and apologizes for his behavior. Naim accepts his apology and the two leave. As soon as they are in the car, Saleh asks Naim to meet him the following day at the car wash so that he can show her a present that his sister gave him but she refused.

The film then cuts to the next day where Naim attends a party given by her friend Latika (Tina Majorino) and her boyfriend Eric (Efren Ramirez). He tells her that his sister is in trouble but before he can tell her what she is in trouble for, she leaves in the car. Afterward, Saleh is waiting outside while Naim walks inside to find out what she did wrong. It is then that she learns that she is in jail because she tried to free her sister. Meanwhile, Saleh’s sister sends Naim a gift that is a link to an Internet site that has pictures of her and Eric together in a happier time, which captures her attention and gets her thinking about the reason why she ran off in the first place.
